Trio Awarded 'Emerging Excellence Award' to record debut album

6th August 2014

We are absolutely delighted to announce that the Paddy Callaghan Trio have been granted an 'Emerging Excellence Award' by Help Musicians U.K.

This award will form much of the funding towards the costs of recording our debut album which we hope will be released at the end of the year.

We simply would not have been in a position to achieve this had it not been for Help Musicians U.K. awarding us this grant and we are hugely grateful to them in doing so.

Celtic Connections Festial 2014

13th January 2014

Well in just a few days time we will be celebrating the opening of the Celtic Connections 2014 festival which this year is coming of age in its 21st Birthday!

The festival itself promises to be the best yet and without doubt this will be the busiest Celtic Connections i've ever been involved in, being scheduled for no fewer than 4 concerts.

It all starts for me on Friday night, 17th January in the CCA with the 'Ceol's Craic' gig. Amazing talent on stage including Kathleen MacInness, Laoise Kelly, Sineag MacIntyre & The Friel Sisters!! This gig has already sold out so it promises to be a fantastic atmosphere!

Next up for me is the last date of the TMSA Young Trad Tour gigs in the Mitchel Theatre on Saturday 18th (afternoon). This will be a great wee afternoon, possibly emotional as its our last performance.... or is it?!?!

Then I get a well earned break for a week or so before being thrown in to the last weekend supporting Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker & John Doyle (No Pressure!!) in the Piping centre on the 1st Feb. This gig sold out in November!!!! Absolute madness, but we can't wait for it!

Then my last gig of the festival, falling on the last night, Sunday 2nd Feburary my return to the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician competition as last years winner. What is sure to be an emotional one for me as its where it all started one year ago to the day! I'm really going to enjoy it also!

If you are around at any of these gigs, please feel free to come up and say hello! I don't bite - Honest!!

Hope to see you all there!

St. Andrew's Concert Cancellation

30th November 2013

In respect of the devastating accident that occured in Glasgow last night where a Police helicopter crashed through the roof of the busy Glasgow bar 'The Clutha Vaults', tonight's concert in St. Andrew's in the square alongside Findlay Napier has been cancelled. We would hope that all involved would understand this decision particularly where the venue is within 1/4 mile of the area affected by this accident and the Clutha Vaults having such a fine reputation for music.

We wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery and our thoughts are with the friends and families of those not so fortunate.

The Past Month or So....

30th September 2013

Things have been absolutely manic in the past wee while!

Since my last update we were over playing at the all Ireland Fleadh in Derry in August. This was an incredible event attracting upwards of 400,000 visitors to the city. During our time there we performed for BBC Radio Ulster to a live audience, Supported The Liz Carrol Trio & Flook at a sell out concert, and played live on Irish Television - and to a live audience which exceeded 5 million in the USA alone!!

After the Fleadh, we headed off to the picturesque town of Bondeno in Italy to play at Éire la festa! -

Then the next installment was a trip to the Isle of Jura to play in the 20th Jura Music Festival. It was great to be invited back to this festival as it was one of the very first we had performed at, and the crowd and craic were of the highest order as always!

Fleadh 'Live'

5th August 2013

I can announce that i'm going to be performing as part of 'Fleadh Live' during this years Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann from Derry. Fleadh Live is a live broadcast on Irish television channel TG4 - also available live online via http://www.tg4.ie/en/player/tg4-player.html

Other artists include Cara Dillon, Flook, Troy McGilvary and Eleanor Shanley.

I'll be playing with a slightly larger band than the trio,  the quartet! on Friday the 16th August from around 8:30pm on the Guildhall Square Stage!

OUCH!

1st August 2013

Well as promised here is an update on the wee accident I had whilst performing at the Wickerman Festival last weekend. Whilst on stage playing with Inishowen, the stool I was sitting on decided to give way and I fell backwards. The only problem was that I tried to save my accordion during the fall (as you do of course!) and thankfully it wasnt harmed. Unfortunately I managed to break my 'coccyx' (tailbone) which was confirmed today at the hospital! to say it's sore is an understatement, but hey-ho - the fingers are unharmed, so all is well!!

E.P. Has Arrived..... Finally!

2nd June 2013

At long, long last I have received the tracks from my recording session from the BBC Pacific Quay studios, with accompanists Michael Bryan & Eamon Nugent and they are definately worth the wait! I couldn't be happier with them, many thanks to Jennifer Cruikshank from BBC Scotland for all the work on these. Head over to my 'Tunes' page to have a listen and let me know what you think!

The Past Few Weeks....

30th July 2013

Well... the past few weeks - infact pretty much since the solas festival has been pretty hectic! After opening the main stage at the festival, I literally left straight for London to compete in the British Championships of traditional music. While there I was delighted to knock up an 8th straight Senior Ceili Band title with St. Roch's Ceili Band and secure our place at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Derry!!

After that incredible weekend, I had a few busy weeks at work before preparing for HebCelt festival in Stornoway. The trio had an hour gig on the Main Arena programme and we were filmed for MG ALBA which was shown on the evening of the performance! - this has since been repeated a few times so keep an eye out for it! It was an absolute honour to share the programme with amazing artists such as The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Dougie MacLean!!

Well after HebCelt - the next stop was the Wickerman festival in Dumfries. Ive now played at the last 5 Wickerman festivals however this was the first time I had a solo gig as well as one with Inishowen.

The festival as a whole was fantastic, and went really well, however I encountered a bit of an injury... more details on that to follow!

Anyways, I've probably forgotten loads thats happened in the past month, so will try and find time to update more regularly and keep you up to date!

Gig At The All-Ireland Fleadh

31st July 2013

Well I've just found out that I'm going to be playing at a gig during this years All-Ireland Fleadh in Derry. This means a lot to me as its an area close to my heart with my Mum being brought up only 9 miles down the road! I'm sure there will be a lot of family there at the gig who have never been able to see me perform live before, so it will be really nice to be able to play for them in their own backyard!

.....oh and as if that wasn't enough..... the gig is a support slot to Flook & The Liz Carrol Trio - thats just insane!!

The Recovery from Shetland!

25th May 2013

It's been a while now since the Shetland Folk Festival, but only now are the trio settling back to normality! It was an incredible week and if you are looking for more info on how it all went, check out my blog on this site! The trio have been working hard since, and even managed to fit in another 3 performances since coming back to the mainland including guest artists on BBC Radio Scotland's 'Take the Floor' programme to be aired in the coming weeks. We have also been asked to perform at 'Folklub' on the 11th June which is a great new venture in Glasgow
